The Beulah Burman Memorial Animal Shelter Society (BBMASS) is accepting offers and ideas about the use of this beautiful building, located at 528 Sandy Point Road in Shelburne, Nova Scotia!

BBMASS was formed in 1998 to direct the Trust Fund (approximately $98,000) left by Beulah Burman which was intended for the care of animals in distress. The shelter was constructed to this end, and opened in October 2001.

The shelter is set on 2.1 acres of land, with paths to the harbour's edge for walking dogs. The building hosts two kennel areas (one section originally used for observation and quarantine), each with 5 separate interior/exterior kennels and infloor heating. There are also 16 cat cages on site. Existing capacity is approximately 10 dogs and 35 cats/kittens. The shelter operated for 2 years and saw 194 dogs and 228 cats come through its doors, but operated at a loss and was forced to close in October 2003 due to a lack of funds and volunteer burnout.

Because PET Projects has grown to become the public face and driving force of the society, evolving BBMASS from a traditional animal shelter to a cage-free organization, it has given us an opportunity to use the shelter building in equally non-traditional ways to help animals in need and benefit the community!
